This is a bamboo basket handcrafted with shinodake bamboo in Iwate Prefecture. Shinodake bamboo is known for its resistance to water, and excellent breathability.

This basket has a distinctive design, round with a square bottom. This style of basket was once used as a sieve for separating charcoal and ash; that is what Akutōshi （灰汁通し)" refers to.
The large mesh allows for good ventilation, and it's recommended for storing vegetables and fruit, or even as a dish drying basket in the kitchen. Also it is a versatile basket that can hold a variety of other items, such as sewing tools and small accessories. It's lightweight, flexible and durable, you can easily wash it with water if it gets dirty, and wipe it off and let it dry naturally.
