A reimagining of a timeless philosophical classic, this shadow sculpture dives into the allegory from Plato's Republic, where prisoners are chained inside a dark cavern in such a way that their entire reality is defined by the shifting shadows projected onto the opposing wall. Because they have no direct knowledge of the actual objects casting those shapes, appearance and reality are placed into serious question. With this piece, we wanted to introduce a subtle, ironic twist to the narrative: here, the prisoner believes himself to be relieved from his fixed position—even if only on Thursdays—but in truth, he has merely transitioned into becoming one of the sources of the shadow theater itself. It is a playful yet haunting commentary on the illusions of liberation, where the observer inadvertently becomes the author of the spectacle.
To capture this fluid transition between reality and illusion, we hand-painted the central figure with an airbrush on high-grade clear acrylic glass using Indian ink. We then wove the painted pane into the raw steel structure using a fine physical thread that intersects with the composition, seamlessly bridging the gap between two-dimensional imagery and a three-dimensional physical web. The sculpture is specifically engineered to function as an interactive shadow piece. When natural sunlight or a dedicated spotlight hits the clear acrylic, light passes directly through the pigment, projecting a soft, ethereal reflection onto the wall behind it. As the light source shifts throughout the day, the cast shadow evolves, allowing the artwork to extend beyond its physical boundary and transform the surrounding wall into a dynamic geometric composition.
The craftsmanship behind the piece highlights our raw, manual studio process, celebrating the contrast between delicate artwork and industrial framing. The frame is welded by hand from structural steel bars, providing an architectural, minimalist containment that grounds the weightless, floating nature of the ink drawing inside. By placing this dialogue of steel, thread, and translucent imagery into a domestic space, the sculpture serves as a constant, conversational reminder of the thin lines that separate what we see from what truly exists.
