Portsmouth's Lillies took the field in 1888 as part of the New England League, carrying the pride of a New Hampshire seaport into professional baseball's earliest days. Minor league clubs like this one were the backbone of small city life in the late nineteenth century. They gave towns an identity beyond their industries.
Part of our Defunct Baseball collection, inspired by the vintage Minor League teams of yesteryear.
