A fine wall tapestry woven on a Jacquard loom by Master Flemish weavers, the Captive Unicorn Red Wall Tapestry holds exceptional detail and is embellished with a medieval style acanthus border. The originals are a set of six wall hangings woven in the 15th Century depicting the Unicorn Hunt. This panel is the sixth and shows the Unicorn seated within an enclosure in a flowery mede. Note the`mille fleur' style, among which can be seen are pansies, ragged robin, violets, daisies, harebells, bluebells, periwinkles and other wild flowers.
Gold, silk and fine wools were used in the weaving of the original. Woven in France for the family La Rochefoucauld which adorned their Chateau of Verteuil. The series was sold for $1,100,000 in 1923 to Mr J.D. Rockefeller and can now be seen in the Metropolitan Museum New York.
A reproduction of this tapestry can now be viewed at Stirling Castle.
